WQAC Statement on the rejection of Glencore’s GAB project
The 24 councils of Western Queensland have welcomed today’s decision by the Queensland Government to reject Glencore’s proposed injection of industrial waste into the Great Artesian Basin (GAB).
In our region, from the Gulf to the New South Wales border, the GAB supports thousands of people and helps drive the billions of dollars through our industries and supports many vulnerable communities that rely on it for reliable, clean water.
We are encouraged by this decision as well as the groundswell of support across Queensland to protect this vital natural resource now and into the future.
The GAB is simply too precious to act as a test case and we are pleased that commonsense, backed up by science has finally halted this project.
This is just the first step and we continue to stand with our communities, landholders, and peak industry bodies including the Queensland Farmers Federation and AgForce to ensure future projects are not even considered for the GAB.
